Creating a Collective Message within a Community

Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland (2022)

Collaboration: ArtEZ, PPR, the MAC, and Streetbeat

During my international Master: Artist Educator we spend 3 months in Belfast. During these months we were asked to set up artistic projects with communities that we felt connected to.  I choose to work together with PPR, on mental health and with Streetbeat, a youth centre. The goal for me as an artist coming in from the outside, was to create an opportunity within the group to get to know themselves and each other in a more intimate and personal way through art. My hope was to connect the group with each other and subtract a visual collective message that would represent the group (in that moment).

Method
First the participants create a personal symbol based on why they choose to be part of that community. The next step is combining all these symbols into one big drawing/painting, The group gets to create a visual representation of their group identity and what is important to them as individual and group. It can deeply connect a group and teach the members a lot about themselves and their group members.

The work above was made by a group of neurodiverse teenagers in Belfast. It was truly an honor to work together with this group. It was wonderful to see how they translated their struggles which brought them together at Streetbeat (a youth centre in Belfast) into collaborative artwork.
